Vintage Crisp Packet: Saucey Tomato Wotsits (1984)

I warned you, when I looked at the vintage Smiths crisps mug, that the door had been opened to buying vintage crisp memorabilia. And, once that door is opened, there's no closing it. Which isn't good news for my bank balance, but it's excellent news for British Crisps. This means that, today, I'm going to treat you to a look at a 1984 packet of Saucey Tomato Wotsits.

Slabs Slightly Sea Salted

Crisps? I've known a few. Nobbly, straight cut, crinkle cut, square cut, puffed up, claw shaped, ring shaped, hand cooked, slow baked, quick fried and countless more. The thing is, I'd probably tasted all of these by the age of eight. So, when it came to new crisp adventures, was British Crisps to be forever stuck going round a ring road paved with the same old potatoes? Sure, new flavours have always been plentiful. But what about a a texture which put on my indicators and took me somewhere new? Well, I've finally found it in Slabs Slightly Sea Salted.

Let's face it, as the owner of Curious British Telly, it was inevitable that British Crisps was going to end up dipping its toe into vintage memorabilia and nostalgia. And, so, it has started.

First up, I purchased the Smiths Twists Party Book, but, as you can can see here, that had as much to with crisps as wrought iron railings do. My second purchase, however, was much more enshrined in crisp territory. It was also terrifically exciting. It was, of course, the Smiths Crisps singing potatoes mug which, yes, played a musical tune.

Fairfields Farm Sea Salt & Aspall Cyder Vinegar

It's always nice to be surprised and, following an impromptu visit to a cafe in a soft play centre, I found myself enjoying some of the finest salt and vinegar crisps available. Regular readers of British Crisps will know that I recently had my mind blown by the Co-op's Sea Salt & Chardonnay Wine Vinegar, but what of the other end of the spectrum? Well, it turns out you don't need an overload of neurotransmitters firing all manner of signals through your central nervous system. Instead, you can kick back with a bag of Sea Salt & Aspall Cyder Vinegar crisps by Fairfields Farm.

Brown Bag Tiger Prawn

Without a shadow of a doubt, these Tiger Prawn (with a hint of chilli & lime) crisps by Brown Bag have instantly become my favourite prawn flavoured crisps. Traditionally, the choice of British Crisps, when it comes to prawn flavourings, has been Walkers Prawn Cocktail. An intense experience of acidic prawn, they're a crisp option which retains my interest, but perhaps I need a little more these days. And Brown Bag's Tiger Prawn crisps have plenty going on.

M&S Sticky Glazed Pork

Marks & Spencer have come up with a classic gem in the form of their Sticky Glazed Pork crisps, and it's one which makes up for the somewhat disappointing experience British Crisps had with their Pepperoni Pizza crisps. Yes, these Sticky Glazed Pork crisps have restored my faith in one of Britain's oldest and most trusted brands, so it's crucial you understand just how good they are.
